How our cabinets are built..
Cabinets are constructed using 1/2 inch plywood for the sides and floor for all base and wall cabinets.
1/4 inch plywood is used for the backs of all cabinets. There will also be a full back in all cabinets even the sink base.
All face frames are constructed using 3/4 inch solid wood with pocket hole joinery.
The whole cabinet, sides to face frame and back to the sides and hanging rails, are all glued together. No prefinished material is used.
The glue make a strong joint as to not separate. Glue (whether it be wood or hot glue) doesn't stick to finished materials. Some leave backs off till after all painting is done, then the back is attached.
Think of it like this, your wall cabinets are hung with screws through the back of the cabinet. If the back isn't attached strongly enough to the rest of cabinet, the weight of items in cabinets starts to pull the cabinet off the wall. The back of cabinet will still be on the wall, I've seen it happen see photo.
Not my cabinets
After Cabinets are built, they are pre-assembled in shop and all door, drawers and shelves are checked for proper fit.
Also at this stage the two mating cabinet faceframes are sanded flush for a better quality finish when later assembled in your kitchen.
Drawer boxes are made from 1/2 inch thick russian plywood on all 4 sides. A 1/4 thick plywood floor is fitted into a grove on all 4 sides of the box. A solid 3/4 inch thick front is then attached before being painted.
All of the inside of the cabinets are finished the same as the kitchen. We use a high quality wood finish coating that is sprayed on.
